Upon calling, individuals will be put in touch with a trained staffer who is either specially trained in mental health disorders, has personally experienced addiction themselves, or who is a peer advocate. The HOPEline staff can connect callers to services including (but not limited to) assessments, interventions, treatment programs, and support. The City of New York offers several services through their alcohol and drug use services program. This program provides a number of services that are provided in physical locations, putting individuals struggling with substance misuse and addiction the opportunity to learn more about their resources. Peer specialists work at locations that offer clean syringes, drug test strips, naloxone, and more. They have the opportunity to speak directly to those struggling and can offer helpful resources, such as contact information for community support groups and treatment centers.
NYC Health + Hospitals is the nation’s largest municipal healthcare delivery system and is comprised of 11 hospitals, 30 Gotham health centers, and 5 long-term care centers. They provide a variety of services, including alcohol, substance use, and opioid services. Through their work in this area, staff members offer medically-supervised outpatient programs, outpatient detox, opioid treatment programs, buprenorphine clinics, emergency department peer advocates, and medical and mental health professionals who can assist patients who have been hospitalized. Helio Health provides a 24/7 Crisis Center in Syracuse, NY, where individuals struggling with acute substance use and mental health needs can get effective treatment. The City of New York offers a number of Crisis Respite Centers, located throughout the city, where individuals can reside in home-like places to rest and recover for up to one week.
